Overall a great coffee maker, a little expensive. August 6, 2010 mamamia43 I have had this coffee pot for 4 years. This is a replacement for the original DeLonghi that I purchased and had some issues with. The manufacturer sent this out to me after a bit of legwork on my part. I have had very few issues with this. The lid is difficult to screw on and off and hard to get into the right position to pour without spilling. I do almost always spill a little but that is really my only complaint. I have had MAYBE 5 overflows since we got it from not having the carafe positioned far enough back but that is it in 4 years.
Makes a really good pot of coffee on any setting (light-dark)
Lemon July 6, 2010 Unhappy Chappy Beautiful machine, but poorly made. Shame on DeLonghi. They had the chance to really make a nice machine here. The design is gorgeous - as is the stainless carafe. Sadly, during the first five days of having the machine and following the directions to the letter every time, we had three huge overflows. The water filter will not stay seated properly in the base of the water chamber. Finally after getting that settled and placing water chamber back into machine and turned on, the water flowed into the coffee grounds but didn't seep through the grounds, causing all the water to sit on top of the grounds then finally overflow from the machine. The machine even turned off by itself when there was still water remaining in the chamber. The coffee always ended up having grounds in it. Yuck. Returned mine after all this happened.
Delonghi DCM485 Thermal Coffee Maker June 8, 2010 Roger D. Adams (Muncie, IN) First let me state that this coffee maker makes the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Now for the cons. I bought mine from ebay at a good price. The first one lasted about 2 months before it went dead. Push the brew button twice and nothing happens. Kept trying, unpluged, let set, waited 24hrs hoping it would reset. Not so, and I tossed it in the garbage and went to ebay and bought another at a good price. By the way both were used. Anyway plugged the seconed one in and it was loaded with scale. So I run two cycles with vinigar as stated in the manual. Water was clean so I proceeded to brew a pot of coffee. Guess what, dead. Would not start to brew. I have emailed the company 2 times with no answere. In the meantime I had purchased new set of filters for around $30, so I had a pretty good investment so far. I am still waiting for a reponce from my emails. I still like the features of this model and if ou can get it cheap enough, try it out. Good luck.
ONE OF THE BEST !!! January 15, 2010 Lumix Fan (Colorado) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was a bit worried buying the DCM485 after reading so many poor reviews but now think the reviews are poor not the coffee maker. I have not had mine for more than a month but using it twice a day, I have not seen any issues as pouring the carafe or having overflow shutoff valve problems.
The top of the carafe has two setting positions marked with arrows, one for brew mode (closed down)and the second for puring mode(open spout). There is even a detent when turning the top lets you feel the brewing position has been achieved. The overflowing problem others mention is a bit strange as the carafe sets down in a lower area sort of a base detent so one only needs to align the carafe strait centered handle out which opens the fill valve without fail on my maker. Seems very logical and a smart design.
Also setting the functions is not obvious but after seeing the clock time(defaults to time of day set)come up after a few minutes lets one know the other clock is the auto time clock for brewing. Left button is to make coffee now or if flashing indicates it is in the auto mode so one just presses again it toggles back to brew now mode(light on solid) and will start to make coffee which has an active indicator you hear it start to perk too, just take your pick which mode you want.
Bottom line is it makes great coffee and I would give it five stars if there was a keep warm plate under the carafe but most of the time coffee is gone before it gets cool in my home. Oh, it is a bit large as maybe Robbie the robot's child. Would be nice when done if in some manner it could say "Coffee's On".
Not the worst ever, but certainly not great. December 28, 2009 E. Alderette (Point Richmond, CA USA) I'd love to spend all day writing this review, but I'm short of time. Bottom line: I have had no mechanical problems with this machine. Bought it from Starbucks about two years ago and use it at least once every day. Held up well and brews a good pot of coffee. I love the theory of a carafe, since I can just brew a pot and plop it down on the dining room table after Thanksgiving dinner.
That being said....
I have never been able to plop this carafe down on the table and let anyone serve themselves because it would ruin my tablecloth and soak my guests. The lid on this pot is NOT well designed. If the carafe is full, it pours fine, but when you get down to less than half a pot, it dribbles down the front. And not a little dribble. As in, you probably lose a half cup of coffee for every one you pour. My father has ruined a tablecloth and a pair of slacks with coffee.
In addition, the lid is very hard to explain to people how to use. I'm used to it, but it's not self evident to anyone first using it. You should not have to go through training to learn how to pour a cup of coffee.
Other downsides: This is NOT an easy-to-use coffee maker. Never have a ever found a piece of electrical equipment that I've needed to read the manual to do basic set up and use (ie: Set the clock and turn on). I could not even figure out how to get the thing to start brewing without the user's guide. Even my husband, who is a programmer and engineer (and we're both early adopters, not 12-o'clock-flashers) couldn't figure out either how to start it brewing OR how to get the lid to unseal to pour without an explanation.
This coffee pot works, but Delonghi went too far into the "form over function" ethos. They've actually made an exceptionally stylish coffee maker that is just about the most difficult to use and unfortunate to own appliance in history.
